    宮本亞門指出，跨國打造原創音樂劇極具挑戰，他曾執導音樂劇「杜蘭朵」，邀請張惠妹飾演杜蘭朵公主，對她認真、苦幹精神印象深刻，這次跨海與魏德聖合作，首度在台執導中文音樂劇，將重新演繹「海角七號」，這是感動許多人的革新作品，電影裡主要演員表演的節奏性強，所使用的音樂也很好，都適合運用在音樂劇。

    製作人曾慧誠表示，藉著台日團隊攜手合作這齣中文音樂劇，希望帶動台灣音樂劇產業發展，以及影視圈人才轉戰劇場。其中，特別商請橫跨導演、主持、歌手及演員的澎恰恰，做為音樂劇監製，並接演茂伯一角。

    2008年海角七號上映創下5.3億元票房，開啟台灣電影復興風潮，魏德聖表示，距今近10年時間陸續有劇團、學校希望合作或改編，但總覺得時候未到，直到宮本亞門找上他，樂見用不同形式呈現，為故事加值。由於海角七號是魏德聖的成名作，讓他有接下來拍電影的機會，為回饋觀眾，魏德聖旗下的果子電影公司將投資這齣中文音樂劇。
